The Rhetorical Situation (please see slide show to the right).
The important elements that you need to know are:
- Audience
- Purpose
- Genre
- Stance
- Media/Design
We applied these ideas to the various versions of Little Red Riding Hood that you have read for this class (see table: "LLRH & RS" to the right)
We then talked about Project 1: Comparison and Contrast, in which you compare and contrast 2 of the 3 different LLRH stories. The main question to answer here is: Which one is better? (I encourage you to complicate this question.)
The steps of comparison and contrast are
1) establishing criteria
2) evaluation
We practiced establishing criteria using several short clips in which people eat tarantulas: 1) the BBC documentary of Piora children, 2) the clip from a show titled "Bizarre Foods" and 3) "Food for Louis" Each of the films involved eating tarantulas, but in different ways.
You identified that the films had different purposes: 1 informed the audience about a culture and their lifestyle, 2) informed about the way to prepare tarantulas, while 3 entertained.
You also identified that the characters in the films had different purposes for eating them; the kids in the jungle ate in order to survive, while the woman cooking in Thailand cooked in order to earn money. Conversely, Louis ate as a performance to entertain. We identified several more criteria before I asked you to evaluate. "Which method of eating would you choose?"
Now I would like you to apply this knowledge to the LLRH texts.
Assignment (on Bb)
Draft 1 (due Thursday, Oct 1) - determine the text and criteria you will use. Make a detailed/specific table of the way each criteria works in the two texts
Draft 2 - (due Monday, Oct 12) Create a detailed outline of your paper. Use the link within the assignment page for more information/examples of outlines.
