Introducing Utopias

Today we discussed your mid-term essays. Some common issues were:
Assumptions
 example: "As we all know..."
 Don't assume your reader has the information/perspective that you have. In academic writing, it is your job to convince the skeptical reader.

Qualifying you Opinion
example: "I think..."
The entire paper is your idea/thought. Don't remind the reader of this.

The topic of your sentence is not the topic of your essay.
example: I like this book. (the subject of this sentence is you, not the book.)

Errors in translatioin:
"Nowadays" change to currently
"more and more" change to increasingly or more frequently
"less and less"  change to more infrequently or decline
cliched words to never use again:
vivid
colorful
phenomenon


Your assignment:
Review your mid-term essay.
1) identify what is working well
2) identify what is not working
3) describe what you would do to fix it.
You may use the feedback I have given you, but you must also have your own words and thoughts.

After the break, I introduced the concept of utopia Utopia and introduced our semester-long project (please see assignment sheet at right).

We began with our usual "Would You Rather" exercise. And today I added a new rule: refer to another of your colleagues' arguments and agree/disagree/build with it.
